Botox®
BOTOX® is the brand name of “botulinum toxin” which is a pharmacologic agent that temporarily relaxes muscles. BOTOX® can be injected into muscles that cause frown lines to help make them less prominent. BOTOX® works best on wrinkles found on the upper 1/3 of the face. BOTOX® is used to treat muscles that cause frown lines such as those located on the forehead, between the brow, or around the eyes (crow’s feet). Effects of botox are temporary and may last approximately 3 to 6 months. BOTOX® injections need to be repeated to in order to achieve the desired results. It is a quick, safe and simple procedure that is performed in the office.
BOTOX® is administered by injecting the target muscle using a very fine needle (gauge 30 needle which is almost as fine as hair). Studies have also suggested that BOTOX® is effective in relieving migraine headaches, excessive sweating and muscle spasms in the neck, eyes or other parts of the body.
Deep, longstanding facial wrinkles may not disappear with Botox injections alone. In these situations, the use of injectable fillers in addition to Botox may be of benefit.
Injectable Fillers
The visible signs of facial aging occur over time as a result of sun exposure, heredity and life style. One of the earliest signs of aging is a loss of facial fullness and the development of wrinkles. Softening of these facial lines and the restoration of volume and fullness in the face often can be achieved non-surgically with injectable fillers. If you would like to restore facial contours, or reduce the appearance of lines and creases, soft tissue fillers may be right for you.
Injectable fillers can:
- Plump thin lips
- Enhance shallow contours
- Soften facial creases and wrinkles
- Improve the appearance of recessed scars
What it won’t do:
Soft tissue augmentation does not stop the aging process. If you wish to change the elements of your face, surgery such as a facelift, brow lift or eye lift may be the answer. Non-surgical rejuvenation treatments such as injectable fillers cannot achieve the same results, but may help delay the time at which a facelift becomes appropriate.
There are a variety of soft tissue fillers available. Currently, the most popular filler being used is hyaluronic acid which is marketed under the brand names “Juvederm” and “Belotero”.
Hyaluronic Acid is a natural substance found in our bodies. It is well suited to plump thin lips and fill facial creases such as nasolabial folds. It may also be appropriate for some surface wrinkles and concave scars. The results generally last for 6 to 12 months.
