Juvederm Volbella XC is the newest product from the VYCROSS family of Juvederm fillers made by Allergan (the makers of Botox & Latisse). Volbella XC is FDA approved for lip augmentation and can also be used to treat perioral rhytids which are often referred to as “smoker’s lines”.
VYCROSS is a proprietary filler technology that blends hyaluronic acid of different molecular weights to create a longer lasting filler material. The first product made with this technology was Juvederm Voluma XC which was introduced to the United States in 2013.
In clinical trials, about 2/3 of the subjects injected with Volbella XC were found to have an improvement in their lip fullness lasting for at least a year.
Compared to Voluma XC, Volbella XC has a lower hyaluronic acid (HA) concentration (15mg/ml). The lower HA concentration of Volbella XC helps create a subtler augmentation of the treated areas, hence, a more natural look.
Volbella XC is a soft, smooth gel that is ideal for adding volume to the lips and for smoothening perioral lines. It has also been used off-label for other areas of the face including periorbital (lines around the eyes) and glabellar (area between the eyebrows) wrinkles.
Volbella XC comes with the local anesthetic “Lidocaine” added to the mixture to help minimize discomfort during the procedure.
Juvederm is the number one selling dermal filler in the United States and the world.
Some of the common side effects of Volbella XC include: swelling, redness, bruising, firmness, lumps/bumps, mild pain and itching. These side effects are usually temporary and resolve on their own without requiring additional treatment.
Who Should Not Receive Juvederm Volbella XC?
People with known allergy to hyaluronic acid fillers or lidocaine should avoid getting Volbella XC.
If you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant or currently breastfeeding; you should avoid getting Volbella XC because its effects during pregnancy or while breastfeeding have not been fully studied.
Volbella XC was studied on subjects over the age of 21. Its use on people under 22 years of age has not been studied.
If you are taking blood thinners such as coumadin (warfarin), Plavix, Heparin, Eliquis, Xarelto, Pradaxa etc., it is recommended that you discontinue (with your MD’s permission) use of the blood thinners prior to undergoing treatment with Volbella XC as these may cause increased bruising and bleeding.
